A Brief History of Pete’s
The first Pete’s Restaurant in Greenville was opened in 1927 by four Greeks at 14 Pendleton Streeet where it was operated with much success until 1976. Pete’s introduced hotdogs with chili which, along with their burgers, were best-selling items. In the 1940’s the owners began opening other Pete’s which were numbered, by agreement between owners. #2 through #9, but not franchised; each restaurant was individually owned by different Greek families and spread Pete’s from Greenville to Easley, Anderson, Greer, Spartanburg and the Ashville, NC, area. Pete’s Restaurants were well-known for their good food and were well-patronized, particularly since there were not many restaurants of their type and the franchised chains had not yet become established. In 1958, Pete’s #6
was opened by Pete Stathos on Highway 93 (Old Greenville Rd.) in Easley. During that time there
were very few restaurants in Easley; among them were Eddie’s Grill, Buck’s Drive-in, and
Easley Steakhouse. In April 1966, Pete’s was moved to its present location on Highway 123 Bypass. The sign from the first Pete’s #6 was brought to the new location. A sign such as this would be restricted today, but this mid-twentieth century, uniquely designed one is grandfathered in place and remains here today as a local landmark. Pete’s #6 has preserved the secret recipes from the original Pete’s. We still make the same chili, coleslaw, onion rings, barbecue sauce and many other ‘homemade’ items which have been tested over time by the Greek families of Pete’s.
